SQLite vs. PostgreSQL in Production - single Ultrasound Modality - single User

Hi Folks,
after getting a working Connection from our Ultrasound Samsung Modality to Orthanc and having some Tests we are really happy! GingkoCAD as well as Aeskulap do work and Orthancs web-frontend is very nice for our purpose.

My question is about using the default SQLite Database in a single user, single ultrasound modality environment. Do you recommend it or should i set up a PostreSQL Database Instance? Which size of storage/number of patients/studies can be handled by SQLite in a solid way?

Thanks for your advice
Georg

Hi,

Switching to PostgreSQL highly depends on your usage. The SQLite version is great for scenarios such as automating imaging flows, deploying temporary DICOM buffers, or benefiting from a desktop mini-PACS on a physician/physicist computer (assuming that long-term archiving is properly ensured by a RIS/PACS system).

As a basic rule of thumb, consider upgrading to PostgreSQL if you have to store more than 50,000 DICOM files in Orthanc. If you have advanced database requirements (such as ensuring archiving, redundancy, mirroring, scalability, clustering, pooling of disk storage…), you should immediately use PostgreSQL.

Is there a recommended way or migration path from sqlite to postresql?

Hello,

Is there a recommended way or migration path from sqlite to postresql?

This is documented in the Wiki:

Hi Sébastien,

Hello,

Is there a recommended way or migration path from sqlite to postresql?

This is documented in the Wiki:
Google Code Archive - Long-term storage for Google Code Project Hosting.

Great idea! I did not assume DB Migration to be in the Replication Chapter but it's really a great way of doing the job.

Thanks for your support! So we will start with SQLite and if necessary we'll migrate.
