# Java plugin for Orthanc 1.0

Dear Orthanc community,
I am delighted to announce the release of the first official release of the [Java plugin for Orthanc](https://orthanc.uclouvain.be/book/plugins/java.html).
Thanks to this plugin, Orthanc can execute plugins written in Java, in a way that is similar to [Python plugins](https://orthanc.uclouvain.be/book/plugins/python.html). In particular, this enables the use of the well-known [dcm4che Java library](https://web.dcm4che.org/dcm4che-library) directly inside Orthanc.
As described in the [reference paper about this work](https://www.scitepress.org/Link.aspx?doi=10.5220/0012384600003657) (i.e., “Setting a PACS on FHIR” that was presented at the [HEALTHINF 2024](https://healthinf.scitevents.org/?y=2024) conference), this plugin can also be used to turn Orthanc into a basic FHIR server thanks to the [HAPI FHIR Java library](https://hapifhir.io/).
Future releases will extend the support of the Orthanc plugin SDK.
I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you of the importance of citing the [reference papers about Orthanc](https://orthanc.uclouvain.be/#references) in your scientific publications. This is essential to ensure the sustainability of the project.

Together with the **STL Plugin** [1.2](https://orthanc.uclouvain.be/hg/orthanc-stl/file/OrthancSTL-1.2/NEWS) that has been released yesterday, the **Java** plugin 1.0 is now available:

- as part of the [orthancteam/orthanc:24.6.2 Docker images](https://hub.docker.com/r/orthancteam/orthanc)
