I now have Orthanc working, and automatically reexporting any incoming DICOM files I upload via the GUI to a network share and sub folders based on the StudyDescription tag via a modified version of AutoClassify.py running as a service on Windows Server 2012 R2 with the web interface behind IIS and an SSL certificate. It has taken a bit of effort to get this far, but I’m very pleased with progress and have learned a fair amount - which is always good right?
The next test (still waiting on the scanner to physically arrive) is for me to emulate a scanning device pushing DICOMs to Orthanc. What Windows based software do other folk use to do this? (if anyone does this at all!).

Good to know you managed to take over all the possible difficulties

Several people have reported that DVTk might be useful in such a context:
I never used this product however, as it is not cross-platform (Windows-only). It would be great to hear your feedback.
Perhaps dicom3tools has some primitives you need to generate the sample files, but it does not support DICOM networking:
Reporting back, DVTk did the trick. To save anyone looking to do this later a lot of frustration, here are the condensed steps ignoring all my false steps along the way: Installed DVT-2.7.0.0 and Definitions-1.1.10.0 from on the host running Orthanc Saved text from as session.ses Created new project in DICOM Validation Tool Created results directory under new project folder Added session.ses as session Right clicked on Storage Scu Emulator Selected Execute Selected all DICOM instances in my sample file Clicked Send I think instances do not appear under the Patient tab in Orthanc until the stable period has passed (60 seconds by default).
